Brake Designer Material Properties Dialog Box

This dialog box displays the material properties used by the Brake Designer for thermal calculations. It is opened by pressing the Material ... button in any of the Brake Designer dialogs. The properties are divided into two groups: Rotor/Drum Properties and Lining Properties.

Rotor/Drum Properties

Density (lb/ft^3) Density of rotor or drum material (used for calculating the mass of the rotor or drum).

Specific Heat (in-lb/lb-deg F) Change in enthalpy of the brake rotor or drum material with respect to temperature at constant pressure.

Conduction Coefficient (in-lb/in^2-hr-deg F-in) Energy transfer coefficient through the brake rotor or drum material.

Convection Coefficient (in-lb/in^2-hr-deg F) Static convective energy transfer coefficient between the brake rotor or drum surface and adjacent air.

Velocity Dependence (in-lb-sec/in^2-hr-deg F-in) Velocity-dependent energy transfer coefficient between the brake rotor or drum surface and adjacent air (i.e., this coefficient is multiplied by vehicle linear velocity to determine the convection rate).

Lining Properties

Density (lb/ft^3) Density of lining material (used for calculating the mass of the pads or shoe lining).

Specific Heat (in-lb/lb-deg F) Change in enthalpy of the brake lining material with respect to temperature at constant pressure.

Conduction Coefficient (in-lb/in^2-hr-deg F-in) Energy transfer coefficient through the brake lining material.

Convection Coefficient (in-lb/in^2-hr-deg F) Static convective energy transfer coefficient between the brake lining surface and adjacent air.

Velocity Dependence (in-lb-sec/in^2-hr-deg F-in) Velocity-dependent energy transfer coefficient between the brake lining surface and adjacent air (i.e., this coefficient is multiplied by vehicle linear velocity to determine the convection rate).
